All interactive tools run entirely in your browser. Your data never leaves your device.

How It Works

Enter one or more words to generate their Soundex and Metaphone codes. Use Compare mode to check if two words sound alike according to either algorithm.

Features

  • Dual algorithms: generates both Soundex (US Census) and Metaphone codes
  • Batch processing: enter multiple words (newline or comma-separated)
  • Compare mode: check if two words are phonetic matches
  • Soundex: 4-character code (letter + 3 digits) per the NARA standard
  • Metaphone: variable-length phonetic code by Lawrence Philips
  • Click to copy: click any code to copy it to clipboard
  • 5 examples: common name pairs that demonstrate phonetic matching
  • Private: runs entirely in the browser — no data transmitted

Use Cases

  • Fuzzy name matching in databases (finding “Smith” when searching “Smyth”)
  • Genealogy research — finding spelling variants of ancestor names
  • Data deduplication — detecting duplicate records with spelling differences
  • Linguistic analysis and phonetic comparison
